Ford has set its sights on the Mitsubishi Triton and Isuzu D-Max with the special-edition Ranger Tradesman.

Priced from $47,990 drive-away, the Ranger Tradesman is based on the base-model XL with a 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Peak power is 147kW and peak torque is 470Nm, and switchable four-wheel drive is standard.

The new Tradesman swaps the standard steel wheels for a set of 16-inch alloys, a black nudge bar with an LED light bar, a tow bar, side steps, and a plastic bed liner.

Inside, the special edition carries over the XL’s rubber flooring and cloth seats.

Standard equipment includes lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and Ford SYNC infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Six colours are offered, including silver, white, blue, grey, black, and red – but only red is a ‘standard’ colour.

The special edition ute’s sharp drive-away price puts it head-to-head Mitsubishi Triton GLS. Although the Triton has a less powerful engine, it packs a more upmarket look with plenty of chrome and 18-inch alloy wheels on the outside.
